What is the Tarot?

Written by: Nancy Arruda

The Tarot is typically associated to being a divining tool.  It is a deck of 78 cards which allows the diviner the ability to see into the ‘past, present and future’ of others.

Originally the tarot started as a deck of 22 cards, which now is called the Major Arcana.

The history of the tarot is believe to date back prior to the 1800’s.  The earliest deck that is still in existence is believed to have dated back to 1840-1842 and there are only 17 cards which remain in this deck.

The tarot consists of 78 cards in total.  Some more modern decks have added additional cards for further meaning.  This is based on the person who designed them.  So if you have purchased a deck that consist of more then the typical 78 cards it is okay.  As each deck is a vibrational extension of the designer and you will connect or think similarly to the deck that you are attracted to based on the energy of the deck.

Breaking down the deck…

The one 78 card deck can then be broken into two separate decks.  These decks on their own are called the Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana.

The Major Arcana’s are associated to the ‘original’ tarot and it consists of 22 cards, which are associated with the mystery or secrets of the Universe, and they can represent Universal Laws, or the Journey of the Soul.

The Minor Arcana is made up of the remaining 56 cards, and can be broken down again into two sections.  Within the Minor Arcane, there are 40 cards known as the pip or numbered cards, which are associated to the four suits (like regular playing cards) or the four elements.  Also there are 16 The Court Cards, which will make up the 16 different personality types.  The court Cards are known to reflect different people within our life, or how one can use an aspect of that specific personality within a situation, or it can represent the situation itself.
